Karen Roesser

Karen Roesser, RN, MS, AOCN®

The newest of our Faculty Advisors, Karen has more than 20 years of experience as an oncology nurse. She is a leader on the local and national level, having presented to groups around the country and published articles in Oncology Nursing Forum, the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology, and other publications. In 2010, she was awarded the "Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year" by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

In addition, Karen was instrumental in the development of two videos—"Introduction to Oncology Nursing" and "Introduction to Oncology Nursing for the Medical/ Surgical Nurse"—that have been used by HCA hospitals nationwide.

Besides her responsibilities as Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Karen serves as a member of the High Risk Team at Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She meets with individuals and families affected by various cancers to assess their cancer risk and to provide counseling and options for genetic testing and risk reduction.

Cathy Maxwell

Cathy Maxwell, RN, OCN®

Cathy Maxwell has been a full-time oncology nurse since 1979 and currently is the Director of Clinical Operations at Advanced Medical Specialties (AMS), a 50+ physician private practice in Miami, Florida. She has been employed there since 1981, previously serving as a chemotherapy nurse and Director of Research (1990-2006). Her role now includes Director of the chemotherapy suite and the mixing room for 3 AMS locations.

Pamela Hallquist Viale

Pamela Hallquist Viale, RN, MS, CS, ANP, AOCNP®

Pamela Hallquist Viale is an oncology nurse practitioner, consultant, and an associate clinical professor (volunteer series) in the Department of Physiological Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).She obtained her RN degree at Evergreen College in San Jose, CA, and her BSN and MS in oncology nursing at UCSF. In 1995, Pamela attained her post-master's adult nurse practitioner certificate from UCSF and is currently certified as an AOCNP (by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation and an adult nurse practitioner (ANP) by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center.

Pamela has lectured on a variety of oncology nursing subjects, authored over 40 journal articles and chapters, and presented at local, national, and international nursing and medical meetings. She is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology. She received the ONS Susan Baird Award of Excellence in Writing: Clinical Practice for 2004 and 2005. She is a member of ONS and ASCO and has a variety of clinical interests, including colorectal cancer, post-marketing surveillance of oncology drugs, and symptom management.
