Helping your patients benefit from ZOMETA includes helping them stay on therapy by handling any questions or concerns they may have. Your role is critical as you can help them understand what to expect before, during, and after treatment.

ZOMETA employs a q3-q4 week dosing regimen—a regimen supported by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guidelines16,17

Before infusion with ZOMETA

  • Use the interactive Creatinine Clearance Calculator to determine the appropriate dosing of ZOMETA prior to initiating therapy11
  • Monitor serum creatinine level before each dose11
  • Ensure your patients are properly hydrated before administering ZOMETA11
  • Ensure your patients have had a dental examination--any invasive dental surgery should be completed prior to starting treatment with ZOMETA18
  • Patients receiving ZOMETA should take an oral calcium supplement of 500 mg and a multivitamin containing 400 IU vitamin D daily11
  • Let patients know about the potential for side effects, including those most commonly reported: anemia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, pyrexia, weakness, lower limb edema, anorexia, decreased weight, bone pain, myalgia, arthralgia, back pain, malignant neoplasm aggravated, headache, dizziness, insomnia, paresthesia, dyspnea, cough, and abdominal pain11
RTU Chart

*Doses calculated assuming target AUC of 0.66 (mg x hr/L) (creatinine clearance=75 mL/min).

During infusion with ZOMETA

  • ZOMETA 4 mg should be reconstituted and further diluted in 100 mL of sterile 0.9% sodium chloride USP or 5% dextrose injection USP11
  • ZOMETA should be infused over no less than 15 minutes11
  • Monitor patients for signs of acute phase reactions19
  • Encourage patient feedback and response to infusion

After infusion with ZOMETA

  • Discontinue patient IV and properly dispose of materials
  • Check patient's IV site for signs of redness or swelling11
  • Schedule serum creatinine test and date for next infusion
  • Ask patient if he/she has any questions and encourage a dialogue
  • Complete patient documentation in chart
